2024 WNBA Draft: Iowa’s Caitlin Clark Goes No. 1 to Indiana Fever

Fever Win Lottery, Select Naismith Trophy Winner with First Overall Pick

Engelbert Praises Clark’s Impact, Expects Record-Breaking Season

The 2024 WNBA Draft got underway Monday with a bang as the Indiana Fever selected Iowa star Caitlin Clark with the first overall pick. Clark, a two-time Naismith Trophy winner, is widely considered one of the most talented prospects in women's basketball history.

The Fever finished the 2023 season with a 13-27 record, giving them the best odds in the draft lottery. They won the lottery on November 11, 2022, and were awarded the top pick in the draft.

Clark averaged 27.4 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 8.2 assists per game for Iowa during the 2022-23 season. She led the Hawkeyes to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert praised Clark's impact on the game.

"Caitlin Clark is a generational talent," Engelbert said. "She is a dynamic scorer, passer, and rebounder who can impact the game in a variety of ways. I expect her to be a force in the WNBA for many years to come."

The Fever are hoping that Clark can help them turn around their fortunes. They have not made the playoffs since 2016.

The WNBA Draft will continue on Tuesday with rounds 2 and 3. The Sporting News will track all of the picks in real-time.
