Weight Classes Explained
In boxing, weight classes are established to ensure fair competition between boxers of similar weights. Each weight class has a specific upper and lower weight limit, and boxers must weigh in within that range to compete in that class.
Olympic Weight Categories
The number of weight classes in boxing has varied over time, but the Olympic boxing tournament has consistently featured a set number of weight categories for both men and women. At the 2024 Paris Olympics, there will be 13 weight categories for men and 12 for women.
Conventional Weight Classes
In professional boxing, there are 17 conventional weight classes for men and 10 for women. The weight limits for these classes vary slightly between different boxing organizations, such as the World Boxing Council (WBC) and the International Boxing Federation (IBF).
Weight Divisions for Men
The weight divisions for men in Olympic-style amateur boxing are as follows:
- Flyweight (up to 52 kg)
- Bantamweight (up to 56 kg)
- Featherweight (up to 59 kg)
- Lightweight (up to 63 kg)
- Welterweight (up to 69 kg)
- Middleweight (up to 75 kg)
- Light heavyweight (up to 81 kg)
- Heavyweight (up to 91 kg)
- Super heavyweight (over 91 kg)
