Cortisol Face Fact Or Fiction

Cortisol Face: Fact or Fiction?

Experts Weigh in on the Latest TikTok Trend

TikTok has been buzzing with discussion about "cortisol face," a purported condition caused by high levels of the stress hormone cortisol. However, experts have expressed skepticism, arguing that the concept is based on a misconception about how cortisol affects the body.

"Cortisol is a hormone that is released in response to stress," explains Dr. David Heber, a double board-certified medical doctor and wellness expert. "It's often seen as a culprit for a variety of health problems, but the reality is more nuanced. Cortisol is actually essential for energy, focus, and other important bodily functions."

According to Dr. Heber, the idea of "cortisol face" stems from a misunderstanding about how cortisol typically affects the body. "Cortisol does not typically cause noticeable facial inflammation," he says. "It is more likely to lead to weight gain, high blood pressure, and other systemic effects."

So, is TikTok spreading misinformation about cortisol face? Not entirely, says Dr. Heber. "Cortisol can contribute to facial puffiness and water retention in some cases," he acknowledges. "But it is not as common as people may believe. Other factors, such as diet, sleep, and hydration, are more likely to play a role in facial appearance."

Ultimately, experts advise against using TikTok as a primary source of medical information. "It's always best to consult with a qualified healthcare professional if you have any concerns about your health," says Dr. Heber. "They can provide accurate information and guidance based on your individual situation."
