Cortisol: The Stress Hormone

What is Cortisol?

Cortisol is a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands, which are located on top of the kidneys. It is released in response to stress and plays a key role in regulating metabolism, sleep, immune function, and inflammation.

Functions of Cortisol

Cortisol has a wide range of functions in the body, including:

  • Regulating blood sugar levels by increasing the release of glucose from the liver
  • Suppressing the immune system to reduce inflammation
  • Promoting the breakdown of proteins and fats to provide energy
  • Increasing blood pressure and heart rate to prepare the body for physical activity
  • Improving memory and attention
